I live in a poor rural county and these people are everywhere.
these types of Republican voters are primarily guided by their racism (and homophobia, xenophobia, general bigotry). that’s literally the thing that means the most to them, above all other issues, when they vote.
this is the entire explanation for why they vote Republican and against their best interests, end of story.
